No one was surprised when Bayern lifted the Bundesliga winners’ trophy over their heads this spring. Except for one weak period, it was sovereignly the best all season and won on merit for the ninth time in a row.
After the last 34 rounds, it had a thirteen-point lead over second-placed Leipzig, and it had played its last four games at half throttle.
Bayern’s players broke some interesting records last season, the most notable being Robert Lewandowski, who scored his forty-first goal in the last minute of the last round, breaking the Bundesliga record for most goals in a Bundesliga season. Until then, it was held by the legendary Gerd Müller.
The Polish cannonballer would like to continue this performance, as his goal is to win the first Ballon d’Or of his career. However, due to Lionel Messi’s triumph at the Copa America, he is no longer the main favourite to win the valuable award.
What will be important is the service he gets from the wingers. Neither Leroy Sané nor Serge Gnabry played their best football last season, it was downright misery from the former Premier League champion with Manchester City.
The midfield is packed with the best. You’d be hard pressed to find a better trio in the world than Leon Goretzka, Joshua Kimmich, Thomas Müller, the most you can compare it to is the one at Manchester City. And Jamal Musiala can still come off the bench.
In defence, the biggest, or the only proper, changes have been made. Two key stoppers have left the club after years away, David Alaba will try La Liga, Jerome Boateng is looking for a new club. In their place, Dayot Upamecano, mature for his age, has arrived from Leipzig.
Otherwise, Canadian Alphonso Davies and Frenchman Benjamin Pavard are on the flanks, while the strong Niklas Süle and the more technically equipped Lucas Hernandez will fight for the other spot in the centre of defence.
The positive for Bayern is that apart from the aforementioned defenders, only veteran Javi Martinez has left, then only the youngsters who have left on loan. In addition to Upamecan, left back Omar Richards and goalkeeper Sven Ulreich have also joined.
Bayern still have the strongest squad in the Bundesliga and anything other than the title will be considered a failure. However, the first round draw with Monchengladbach already showed that no one will give them anything for free.
Prediction: 1st place
