A glance at the Bundesliga table is inspiring. For many reasons. But the short answer is that it’s full of surprises. Big ones. One of them is the fact that Werder Bremen are shining after returning to the elite and surpassing all expectations. Behind their potentially huge success is 34-year-old Ole Werner, who boasts a unique CV.
The return to the elite was not easy
It was a big shock when Werder were relegated in the 2020/21 season. Along with them, Schalke moved down a league. Two big clubs, traditional teams with big fan bases. However, their return to the Bundesliga fortunately didn’t last long.
Especially in Bremen, it wasn’t easy. The start of the season didn’t go well at all, neither the performances nor the results were good. In addition, the falsification of the so-called covid-pass led to a change of coach. And the club couldn’t have done any better.
The experienced Markus Anfang was replaced by the then only 33-year-old Ole Werner. He didn’t have much of a playing career behind him. On the contrary. And his coaching career wasn’t much better. The young coach only coached Holstein Kiel, where he did not do badly.
When he signed on as a free coach with Bremen, a beautiful fairy tale began to unfold. Werder came to life under his leadership. Immediately. Although nobody would have bet on him to be promoted back to the elite, it happened.
Werner is one of the most talented coaches in Germany
Ole Werner is now 34 years old. For the first time, he is leading a top-flight team. And that’s with the famous Bremen, with whom he won promotion. Not much was expected of the team in the season after promotion. Werder were often considered by experts to be one of the teams that would play for survival.
But the start of the season was incredibly successful. After nine games in the league, Bremen have 15 points from 4 wins, 3 draws and 2 losses. They have beaten Dortmund, Mönchengladbach and Hoffenheim. Moreover, the 20::14 scoreline shows that Werner’s team’s games are not boring.
Werder cannot boast of having any stars in their team, but Werner knows how to get the most out of his players and then some. He tries to impose simple football on his players, but it works.
Deadly breaks, directness great commitment, courage and above all great character. That’s what characterises Bremen today. And they are not bad at all in terms of combination.
It’s worth noting then that Werner could easily be doing anything other than coaching one of the biggest clubs in Germany. He is a trained banker, he even studied German studies. To make matters worse, he made his living in Australia as a gardener for a time.
Of course, he can’t be spoken of as another Julian Nagelsmann, who is particularly known for his incredible ability to tactically. However, the fact is that Werner has a great flair for finding the best for the team without making exaggerated changes from the ground up.
Werner is also praised by club legends and staff precisely because of the aforementioned facts. And no wonder. It would be great if he could return Werder to Europe and the top spots in the Bundesliga, where he was still playing regularly until about 10 years ago.
