Werder Bremen? One of the most famous and traditional clubs in Germany, a decade ago they were still playing European Cups. But now the reality is absolutely different. The team from the north of Germany is now playing in the second league.
The Moravian-Silesian duo of Theodor Gebre Selassie and Jiri Pavlenka were not absent from the relegation. While the former became a club legend and left the club when his contract expired, the latter is still with Bremen.
Will this continue to be the case? Pavlenka has been interested for a long time, and has been linked with a transfer every summer. His performances simply attracted attention. But he wanted to take the gradual path and Werder had no reason to sell him.
But relegation to the second league often means selling off stars if the club doesn’t want to move back to the elite immediately. But Bremen would like to do that, yet several players have already left.
Milot Rashica left for Norwich, but his transfer has been on the cards for some time. The talent Josh Sargent, on whom the attack was supposed to be based, left for the same team. Subsequently, Yuya Osako left and captain Niklas Moisander returned to Finland after his contract expired.
But it still doesn’t end there. Ludwig Augustinsson, who was a key left-back, is on his way out. Davie Selke went on loan to Hertha and Pavlenko’s rival Stefanos Kapino left for Arminia Bielefeld.
It should be mentioned that Bremen did not have the best start to the new season in the second league. In two games they have gained four points, their performances are no mean feat. Pavlenko’s future more or less depends on the club’s ambitions.
The native of Hlučín should be an unquestionable number one, but due to injuries he has not yet played a single game. What about it, Werder still have two goalkeepers outside of him, but neither is of that quality.
What’s more, the Bremen team is very weakened and if they have to have a support somewhere, it’s in goal, which Pavlenka would have to guard. The club can’t afford to bring in a goalkeeper of similar quality, even if they sell him.
It is therefore possible that Pavlenka himself will try for promotion with Werder this season. But if he fails, it could be his last year in northern Germany.
After all, his contract at the club expires in a year and it is possible that he could leave as a free agent.
