The South American World Cup qualifiers continue during the national break, with the favoured Brazil facing Venezuela, who are fighting for their first ever World Cup appearance.
As expected, the match went better for the home side, who took the lead five minutes into the second half thanks to Gabriel. Twenty minutes later, their second goal was disallowed due to offside.
Five minutes before the end of the game, the shock came. Venezuela managed to equalise and, much to the displeasure of the home supporters, won a sensational and very valuable draw.
This result also ended Brazil’s streak of fifteen consecutive home wins in World Cup qualifying. The last such loss of points dates back to the 2016 match against Uruguay.
The result greatly angered the home fans. One of them even didn’t hesitate to filter his anger through his team’s biggest star and threw a packet of popcorn at him, which made Neymar very angry.
Neymar surpassed Pelé last month to become the top scorer in Brazilian national team history. As it has long been shown, he is the one most to blame for all the failures and disappointing performances by the fans.
“I absolutely disagree. If the fans want to boo, that’s fine. But throwing a packet of popcorn doesn’t help anything. I think it shows a lack of respect for those who came to play and tried to give their best performance,” Brazil coach Fernando Diniz commented on the incident.
The Canaries are in third place in the group after three games played. Argentina, which is still 100 percent, leads the table.
