But will they be enough when combined with emotion and passion?
Borussia Dortmund dreams of a second Champions League trophy
One of the biggest teams in Germany has long had a reputation as a great base for young players. Aces like Erling Haaland, Ousmane Dembélé, Robert Lewandowski, Jude Bellingham and the list could go on and on.
But beyond that, Borussia Dortmund have big sporting ambitions. It wants to compete for trophies. The fact that, for various reasons, it hasn’t been very successful for a long time is another matter. Sometimes the problem seems to be the absence of a winning mentality, sometimes the overall quality of a team that relies heavily on young talent is questioned.
But it doesn’t seem unrealistic now. BVB could dominate the Champions League for the second time in their history. The first and last time it did so was in 1996/97. But what will the mentality of the players do? After all, Edin Terzic’s charges don’t quite handle big and important games.
Borussia are not very experienced in winning trophies either. In the last ten years they have only won five trophies, three of them in the German Super Cup and two in the DFB-Pokal. The last trophy won dates back to the 2020/21 season.
However, the PSG elimination showed that Dortmund can swallow their egos, retract, forget about the who-knows-how-attractive football and go for the most important thing – the desired result. Kylian Mbappé was invisible in both duels against BVB. Yes, the German side also had a piece of luck throughout the double-header, but history doesn’t ask that.
With Bayern or Real Madrid, Terzić’s selection will be in the role of underdog again, at least so he will not be under pressure. However, the motivation in the team is huge. Also thanks to the big stories, which we can briefly explore below.
BVB as a team full of big stories
As soon as Borussia Dortmund knocked out PSG, comments of many stories emerged on social media. Besides, many football fans highlighted that tradition, emotion and passion beat money. The German club itself then took a swipe at PSG on social media.
BVB and PSG clashed in 2020 after the Westphalian club went through a group death. Dortmund won the first leg and Erling Haaland scored twice, who produced a memorable celebration. But the rematch was dominated by the Parisians, who celebrated the win in the manner of Haaland, for which they drew criticism from fans. The German side has now recalled the situation.
It is also much discussed that PSG spent over 450 million euros on transfers this season, Borussia Dortmund only about 65 million. According to Transfermarkt, PSG are over 1.2 billion in the transfer market since 2013, BVB boast a profit of over 130million.
But that’s not all. Legends Marco Reus and Mats Hummels will complete their last season in the yellow and black colours. Reus, in particular, would like to go for a big trophy with the club, having won nothing except the German Super Cup and the Cup. For his loyalty, he would definitely deserve it. Moreover, both Reus and Hummels were present at the Champions League final loss to Bayern Munich in 2013.
Borussia then boldly rejoice in the fact that it is also being dragged by two players who came on loan. Jadon Sancho wasn’t disciplined enough for Erik ten Hag at Manchester United, Ian Maatsen wasn’t good enough for Chelsea.
Coach Edin Terzic himself is also writing a big story. The last time Dortmund won the league title in 2012, he watched as a fan in the stands. He came close to winning the title himself a year ago, but lost it in the final minutes of the season. The fans were incredibly supportive afterwards.
Now he can make history and lead Borussia Dortmund to a second Champions League title. Against all odds. BVB were not counted among the aspirants for the trophy. Terzic, meanwhile, was at most an assistant at West Ham or Besiktas until 2020 and had experience coaching BVB’s youth teams. He is still only 41 years old.
