  • The fifth round of the Bundesliga pitted Dortmund and Bochum against each other
  • The visitors surprisingly quickly took a two-goal lead
  • The big turnaround was orchestrated by Stuttgart summer signing Serhou Guirassy

The clash between the neighbouring cities should have been a clear-cut affair for home side Dortmund. Nuri Sahin’s charges brought home a convincing 3-0 win against Bruges in the Champions League opener, but the big blemish in the Bundesliga was the 5-1 debacle from Stuttgart.

And Borussia Dortmund didn’t start well against Bochum either. But first things first. Karim Adeyemi started the game in the fifth league round. But the home forward didn’t beat Patrick Drewes with his header. Neither did a shot from the active Julian Brandt.

Gradually, however, Bochum started to take over the game. The team, which only saved itself among the German elite in the last edition in the barrage, celebrated its first goal in the 16th minute. Great work by the experienced Philipp Hofmann was taken advantage of by Matúš Bero and it was 1: 0.

Borussia Dortmund can thank Guirrasy

It took just five minutes for the Signal Iduna Park to get hot again. Home goalkeeper Gregor Kobel chose a very poor cross that ended up on the foot of Dani de Wit and the 26-year-old Dutchman didn’t hesitate to increase the outsider’s lead.

Myron Boadu could have increased the gap to three goals right afterwards, but he just missed the left post. And so the home side reduced the deficit before half-time. A great chance was first burned by Brandt, who moments later drew a pinpoint centre into the box, which was capitalised on by Serhou Guirassy.

After coming out of the booths, it was first Gross who failed to score. But then captain Emre Can equalised. The 30-year-old midfielder punished a foul on Guirassy from a penalty kick. Bochum, however, were not going to give up the well-played match so easily. But Moritz Broschinski was saved by Kobel.

And that was a mistake. In the 75th minute, Guirassy completed Borussia’s big turnaround with his second goal of the night. The Guinean midfielder was accurately assisted by Adeyemi and the former Stuttgart goalkeeper fired past Drewes. The unfortunate goalkeeper also then ignominiously conceded a weak shot from Nmecha.
