Bizarre excuse? He was severely disturbed by the lights, excusing Jorginha Tuchel’s mistake

Sunday’s Premier League match between Chelsea and Manchester United ended in a 1-1 draw, with goals from Jadon Sancho and Jorginho. But the Italian midfielder also had a hand in the first goal when he gifted Manchester a goal.

Chelsea were, as expected, the better team, they had a huge advantage on the pitch, but they couldn’t convert it into a goal.

And the game got even more complicated for the home side in the 50th minute. A centred ball into the Red Devils’ box was headed to safety by Bruno Fernandes with a high kick, and Jorginho tried to work the ball in the middle of the pitch, but failed to do so.

He dodged the ball, which Jadon Sancho took advantage of and together with Marcus Rashford, the two of them raced at the goalkeeper alone. The young winger signalled a pass and then cleared the ball into an uncovered net.

Jorginho then made amends for the huge mistake when he converted the awarded penalty to at least level the scores at 1-1. Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel had a rather bizarre explanation for the whole situation.

“He misjudged the situation and I think he was heavily distracted by the lights. It happens,” Tuchel surprised everyone in his post-match interview.

“It takes a lot of courage and a strong personality not to be affected by this and have the courage to take a penalty. I’m very happy he did it,” praised Jorginho, the German coach.

Despite losing two points, Chelsea stayed at the top of the Premier League table, but they are now just one point behind relegated Manchester City.
