The legendary Rafael Nadal was planning a big comeback, but unfortunately he will have to wait for it. Rafael Nadal confirmed on Sunday morning that he will not be attending the Australian Open after all. The former world No. 1 was planning a big comeback to start the season, but it has been delayed at the slightest. This is because of a minor muscle injury.

The tennis legend returned to the game recently after a hip injury, playing competitive matches again after almost a year. Nadal did decently well at the Brisbane tournament. His journey there ended in the quarterfinals, with Jordan Thompson as his executioner.

And right at the end of that match, it looked like Nadal might suffer another injury. And although the famous tennis player was optimistic at first, he eventually had to withdraw from the Australian Open due to a micro-tear in his muscle.

It should be noted the tear is not located in the hip area, yet he is sure that he will definitely not play a five-set match. Nadal will therefore return to Spain where he will undergo further tests and treatment.

The two-time Australian Open winner from 2009 and 2022 has not played a Grand Slam since last year’s tournament in Melbourne, where he was the defending champion. He was then knocked out in the second round by American Mackenzie McDonald, who took care of the shocking result after winning 3: 0 in sets.

I’m not ready to play, I’ll fly back to Spain, Nadal said

“Hello everyone. During my last match in Brisbane, I had a small muscle problem, which, as you know, worried me. As soon as I arrived in Melbourne, I had an MRI. They found that I had a micro-tear in my muscle,” Nadal writes on the X platform.

“At the moment, I’m not ready to play at the highest level in five-set matches. I will fly back to Spain to see my doctor, get treatment and rest. I really wanted to play in Australia. Thank you all for your support and see you soon,” added the star Spaniard.
