Betis pulls a super-talent on Sparta. Diao, only 18, scored in his first two games
It’s a discovery of the last few weeks. Assane Diao Diaoune was born in Senegal, but lived in Badajoz from the age of three. Now, at 18, the Betis alumnus is making his debut for the national team and attracting attention.
It’s a discovery of the last few weeks. Assane Diao Diaoune was born in Senegal but lived in Badajoz since he was three years old. Now, at 18, the Betis alumnus is making his debut for the national team and attracting attention.
Remember this name. Until a few weeks ago he was not even known by all Betis fans, but soon he will probably be known all over Spain.
Diao first came on in the Europa League against Rangers when he was sent on for the last three minutes. However, he left a very good impression in training afterwards, until coach Manuel Pellegrini decided to put him in the starting line-up against Granada.
And the 18-year-old proved his worth, scoring his first goal on his debut in the 51st minute. He guided the ball behind the whitewash to his weaker left foot and shot accurately to the bar. Granada equalised later, but Diao made a great impression.
Pellegrini had no reason to take Diao out of the starting lineup and kept him in for this weekend’s game against Valencia. And the 18-year-old thanked the confidence again with a 1:0 goal, which proved to be the winning goal as Betis won 3:0. Diao also took home the player of the match award.
In addition, Diao became the second youngest player in La Liga history to score in his first two games. The first was Pablo Pombo, who scored twice in 1933 at the age of 17.
He impressed scouts from Chelsea, Leipzig, Liverpool and Real Madrid a lot in Betis’ youth. His clause currently stands at €30 million, if he continues at the pace he has set, he could soon be moving house.
However, Betis fans have quickly grown fond of him and would hate to lose him. And maybe Sparta fans will have a chance to see him for themselves.
