Bergkamp, Henry or Cissé. The best goals in any season since the Premier League’s inception
Goal of the Season is an award that has only been officially awarded in the Premier League since the 2016/17 season. It is a poll in which the fans themselves take part in the final decision alongside a panel of experts from a ten percent weighting.
Goal of the Season is an award that has only been officially awarded in the Premier League since the 2016/17 season. It is a poll in which the fans themselves take part in the final decision alongside a panel of experts from a ten percent weighting. The nomination for Goal of the Season goes to the top goalscorer for each month of the season. Despite this year being only the sixth time the award has been presented, the Premier League has retrospectively recognised goals from every season since the competition began in 1992/93.
The list of winners, of course, includes footballing legendary names like David Beckham and his goal from midfield against Wimbledon, Dennis Bergkamp and his wrap around Newcastle defender, Henry and his solo across the pitch in the derby against Tottenham or Wayne Rooney and his impressive scissors in the City derby against City.
But there are also lesser known or more forgotten names, such as Tony Yeboah and his legendary cannonball for Leeds, Liverpool’s Dietmar Hamann and his sweeping shot against Portsmouth, or Newcastle’s Papiss Cisse and his banana into Petr Cech’s net.
Speaking of our footballers in the English league, one of the Czech Republic’s representatives also won the Premier League goal of the season award.
For the 2004/05 season, this award went to Patrik Berger, who, as a Portsmouth player at the time, beautifully rounded a defender and with his left foot from a respectable distance surprised not only the Charlton goalkeeper but also everyone in the stands.
Jack Wilshere’s goals are certainly among the most famous of recent times, whether after a stunning combination into the Norwich goal from the 2013/14 season or after a rocketing shot into the WBA net from the 2014/15 season.
The last two seasons, on the other hand, have been triumphant for players from rival Tottenham. Two seasons ago, Son Heung-Min ran for the trophy when he made cones of Burnley players, last year Erik Lamela won again when he surprised with a ground rabon to the bar in the derby against Arsenal.
