Last season’s Ballon d’Or went to Karim Benzema. The overall ranking of all nominees has already been published. But now we also know who got how many votes. Rather surprisingly, Cristiano Ronaldo was left at zero.
The Ballon d’Or results have already been announced at the official ceremony, but only now do we know who placed how based on how many votes. And there would be some surprises.
One of them is quite possibly Karim Benzema’s sovereign victory. He had a phenomenal year, but there was also talk of Robert Lewandowski finishing fourth.
The French striker was placed first by 89 of the 93 voting judges. Overall, he scored 549 points. Sadio Mané, the runner-up, did not even get over the 200-point mark. Just six points separated third-placed Kevin De Bruyne and fourth-placed Lewandowski.
Mohamed Salah was the last player to score over 100 points. After that, the number of points started to drop considerably. No fewer than 11 footballers did not receive a single vote. Cristiano Ronaldo opens that frontier in 20th position.
Besides the Portuguese legend, stars like Harry Kane, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Phil Foden, Bernardo Silva, Joao Cancelo, Joshua Kimmich, Mike Maignan, Christopher Nkunku, Darwin Nunez and Antonio Rüdiger did not receive any votes.
The fact is, however, that the nomination of Ronaldo was itself a source of embarrassment and controversy given the absence of Messi. According to all sorts of statistical servers, the Argentine had a much better season than the Portuguese.
The full results were published by Goal.
