Former Liverpool coach Rafael Benítez has weighed in on the recent news sent out by Jürgen Klopp. Namely, that he will leave Anfield Road at the end of this season. “He deserves even more credit,” the Spanish coach said of his German colleague.
As we reported a few days ago, Jürgen Klopp will leave Liverpool at the end of this season after nine years at Anfield Road.
The reason, as is also already known among the football public, is that the German coach is simply tired after such a long time and needs a rest. The world’s media has naturally started speculating about who could replace him on the bench of the current Premier League leader.
The most talked about name with regards to a potential move to Liverpool is Xabi Alonso. What is new, however, is the statement made by the former coach of the English big club, Rafael Benítez.
Indeed, the Spanish coach claims to have some insight into how the whole situation actually came about. But Benítez also praised Klopp for announcing his resignation at the end of the season ahead of time.
This will allow the Reds to prepare for the arrival of a new coach, but more importantly, to find that ideal candidate. Needless to say, Benítez coached Liverpool from the summer of 2004 until the end of June 2010.
He led the famous English team to 350 battles, spending as much time at no other team as he did at Liverpool. Under his leadership, the Reds won the Champions League winners’ trophy or the FA Cup.
Benítez on Klopp’s departure
“I´ve an advantage in this. I know the people at Liverpool and also at the club and more or less know how it happened. I know a little bit more about how it went internally. He (Klopp) deserves even more credit for being there and for coming forward and announcing his resignation,” said Benítez, who was quoted by Football Espaňa.
“He went and spoke to the club, gave them time to reorganise, which is very German on the one hand. He´s a friend of mine and I have a good relationship with him. He has done and is doing a tremendous job. I can only say positive things about Klopp and Liverpool,” the Spanish coach concluded.
