He was preparing for the biggest fight of his career so far, but in a second everything changed. Not because of a classic tackle, but a third party intervened in training. Javi Serrano swallowed a bee and will miss the Sporting Lisbon game.
Javi Serrano’s unfortunate moment happened during Wednesday’s pre-match training session. His Sturm Graz may have failed to qualify for the Champions League, but even the Europa League group is a success in the long run.
Swallowing a bee seemed fine at first, Serrano iced his mouth, but doctors later gave the young midfielder cortisone.
The reason being that there was a risk of narrowing the airway due to the swelling increasing. Serrano was taken to the hospital where he was stabilized and released on Thursday.
The fact that the player is not allergic was a big factor in his quick recovery. If he was, a sting in the mouth could have been life-threatening.
Although he is fine, he will start Thursday’s match against Sporting Lisbon. The Austrian side will start the group stage at home, along with Atalanta Bergamo and Rakow Czestochowa fighting for promotion.
Serrano’s absence will not be crucial for the club. The 20-year-old Spaniard is a guest at Sturm Graz from Atletico Madrid and has made only three appearances off the bench in the Austrian Bundesliga so far. He plays primarily for the B-team.
He spent last season on two six-month loan spells in his native Spain. First in Mirandés, then in Ibiza. This time he is enjoying his first first league engagement, but he has to wait at least two weeks for his debut in Europe.
