Nine Bayern Munich players have had to deal with the coronavirus recently. However, with the exception of Manuel Neuer, none of them are fit yet.
The worst offender is Alphonso Davies. The Canadian international had to stop training on Friday as doctors found a heart problem.
“Every player who has contracted the disease has undergone an examination. We found mild signs of myocarditis in Alphonso, so he stopped training immediately and will be unavailable for a few weeks,” coach Julian Nagelsmann said at a press conference.
Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle. It can reduce the heart’s ability to pump blood and/or cause a rapid or irregular heart rhythm.
Davies is only 21 years old. Resting should help. Nagelsmann says that judging by the ultrasound, the problem shouldn’t be dramatic.
The Canadian footballer is not the first Bayern player to have major problems with the coronavirus. Recently, Joshua Kimmich struggled with the virus for a long time even after contracting it and subsequently admitted that it was a mistake not to get vaccinated.
On Saturday, a much weakened Bayern have to face Cologne. In the last round they lost to Borussia Mönchengladbach and Dortmund reduced the Bavarian team’s lead to 6 points. A further loss could therefore make the title fight more dramatic, something they certainly don’t want to let happen.
