Wednesday’s Champions League programme almost offered one big surprise, but Bayern Munich didn’t get beaten in the end. Liverpool confirmed their role as slight favourites in Milan and leave the San Siro with a win.
Bayern averted defeat in the final minutes
Bayern Munich may have had a seemingly easy draw, but Red Bull Salzburg are not to be underestimated. Liverpool and Sevilla know this from recent seasons. That’s why the role of the favourite in the first knockout match on Austrian soil was hard to confirm. In the end, it didn’t even succeed.
In the first half, Bayern were slightly more dominant on the ball as expected, but the match was even on shooting attempts. The goalkeepers on both sides had to make saves and there were quite a few chances. It was an attractive forty-five minutes.
In the 21st minute, Junior Adamu scored the only goal of the first act. It made for an interesting plot.
Bayern had to enter the second half with a clear objective, they wanted to turn the game in their favour, and that’s what their play looked like. If the first act was evenly matched, in the second the Bavarian giant took the reins of the match clearly on their side.
Julian Nagelsmann’s charges were getting into interesting shooting positions, creating chances, dominating the ball, showing their quality. But the effectiveness was not there. It was not until the 90th minute that Kingsley Coman equalized at least for the final 1:1.
A promising result for Salzburg, but the rematch at the Allianz Arena will not be easy. Bayern are much stronger at home. However, they must not underestimate the Austrian hegemon.
Liverpool once again robbed the San Siro
Liverpool had a slightly tougher draw, having to travel to Italy again, once again to the San Siro. In the group stages, they twice faced AC Milan, beating them home and away. Now, however, they face rival Inter.
It was expected to be an attractive duel and an interesting tactical battle, both of which more or less came true. The first half remained without a single shot between the three posts, but there were plenty of chances. For example, Hakan Calhanoglu’s shot rang off the post.
Liverpool, however, were the better team in the first act and had more of the play. The second half was a bit different, with Inter having the better of it, but it was the English side who scored the goals.
Roberto Firmino scored the first goal of the match in the 75th minute, followed eight minutes later by Mohamed Salah, who closed the scoring to 2-0.
Liverpool may regret the abolition of the away goals rule, as a 2:0 away win would have been difficult to avert. Even so, Inter are not expecting anything easy, but they may still have some hope.
