Auston Matthews scores at least 40 goals again this season
In the Winnipeg Jets vs. Toronto Maple Leafs (2:4) game, canon Auston Matthews celebrated two anniversaries. He became the first player this season to break the 40-goal mark. He only needed to play 46 games to achieve this feat!
He leads Sam Reinhart of the Florida Panthers by three goals. Another seven shots back is Czech sniper David Pastrnak and fourth in the standings is Russian Nikita Kucherov with 32 shots. Matthews also scored the game-winning goal.
Matthews broke the 40-goal mark for the sixth time in his career. This is the fifth time in a row. Interestingly, he doesn’t have a 50-goal season, he just skipped that in his best season in 2021/22, when he recorded 60 accurate hits.
So the two-time league top scorer is going for his third goal scoring crown. He has played 527 games in the NHL so far and has scored 339 goals, a fantastic 0.64 goals per game average.
In addition, he has reached a milestone with this goal. He scored 600 points. And in the current season he is 1st in the league scoring with 58 points.
I guess we can never expect this player to win the league scoring title. He’s a natural goal scorer, like Brett Hull used to rampage, he was also one of the dreaded cannon fodder and always produced a staggering amount of goals before passing.
NY Rangers get caught on Ottawa ice
In the game Ottawa Seanators vs New York Rangers (2:7), the Riders decided the game in the second period. They managed to decimate Ottawa with five goals in 11 minutes. Great performance by the goalie after a long time. This time Jonathan Quick was in goal and defused 29 shots of the opponent.
Artemi Panarin contributed to the victory with three points on a goal and two assists. The Rangers finally caught up after losing game after game in January. The game also featured significant anniversaries for players on both sides.
Claude Giroux, longtime Flyers captain, notched his 700th career assist in the Ottawa debacle. Mika Zibanejad had more reason to rejoice, however, as he recorded his 500th point in 534 games played for the Rangers, the fourth-fastest player in franchise history to reach that mark.
