Bayern Munich unexpectedly lost 1:2 to Augsburg in the 12th round of the Bundesliga on Friday night. The visitors suffered their second league defeat of the season. Czech midfielder Jan Morávek was on the pitch from the 74th minute.
Bayern were missing Süle and Stanišić, who tested positive for coronavirus, and Joshua Kimmich, who was not vaccinated, was quarantined. Kingsley Coman was not allowed to play either.
The home team couldn’t count on Swiss international Vargas, who also tested positive, Icelandic Finnbogason didn’t start due to muscle problems, midfielder Strobl tore his ACL in the last game.
The home side came at Bayern from the start, pressed and got their deserved reward in the 23rd minute when Mads Pedersen sent them into the lead. In the 35th minute it was 2:0.
Bayern made a mistake with Sabitzer’s cross and through Zeqiri and Iago the ball went to Hahn, who headed over Neuer. Robert Lewandowski immediately reduced the deficit for Bayern.
From the 38th minute it was 2-1 and Bayern had more than half time to turn the score around. However, Jan Moravek was unable to do so, as he was well involved in the home team’s defensive block.
The visitors made uncharacteristic mistakes in the pre-final phase, passes were inaccurate, balls bounced off the crossbar and Augsburg’s defensive block could not be overcome.
The home side moved up to 15th in the table, last above the line, with the win. If second-placed Dortmund beat struggling Stuttgart at home on Saturday, they will move within one point of Bayern.
