Atlético Madrid beat Athletic Bilbao 3-1 at home in the 34th round of La Liga. The second half was decisive, with the home side making the most of a minimum of chances. They are six points clear in fourth place.
The start of the match was very cautious from both sides. In the 11th minute, Samuel Lin’s shot was blocked by Bilbao’s defence. Four minutes later, Atlético were celebrating, with Rodrigo de Paul’s shot hitting the crossbar.
The visitors responded in the 29th minute, but Oihan Sancet just missed the right post in a good position. The match continued at a slow pace, which was related to the importance of the match. It wasn’t until the 42nd minute that the visiting Yeray Alvarez shot inaccurately.
However, Bilbao equalised before half-time, with Spanish international Nico Williams scoring after a pass from Gorka Guruzet. After two goals from two rather sporadic chances, it was 1-1.
Quickly after the change of sides, the home side took the lead back, with another Atlético Argentine Angel Correa celebrating after a shot to the left post. And Correa continued to be on his game, his header having to be cleared by Unai Simon in the 72nd minute.
In the 80th minute, the home side celebrated their third goal. Lin’s initial intention failed as he sent the ball just inside the bar. However, the ball was deflected unluckily into the net by goalkeeper Simon and Madrid were already two shots up.
In the 89th minute, Ander Herrera had the reduction on his head, but could not direct the ball between the three posts. Samuel Lino had the last chance of the game on the other side, but his attempt was blocked. But he was not to be disappointed.
Atlético increased their lead over fifth-placed Bilbao to six points with a 3-1 win.
