At 37, Modric continues to amaze the football world
Real Madrid have dominated European football for many years. Many years ago, there was speculation among pundits that the trio of midfielders Modric – Casemiro – Kroos, who dominated the midfield in the team’s most successful days under Zinedine Zidane, had already missed the train.
Of the feared trio, only a couple of the more creative members of the trio remain together. Casemiro, in fact, transferred to Manchester United before the season.
While Toni Kroos tends to direct the play and has been playing more from deep midfield lately, Luka Modric has been astonishing the football world with his ageless physical stock. He showed this time and time again in yesterday’s rematch of last year’s Champions League final against Liverpool.
With the action before the fifth goal, he made the year-old duel with PSG
It was Modric who, shortly after the change of sides, fed Milito’s centre for the match-winning goal. But it was what he did in the 67th minute that gave a flashback to last year’s memorable turnaround against a star-studded PSG side.
In that one, Real Madrid had one foot out of the competition, only for the 37-year-old Croatian midfielder to turn the tide with an incredible action. What made his feat all the more impressive was that it was in the 76th minute of the match.
He then gave an emotional moment to remember in yesterday’s match, where he once again showed that, even at his advanced age, he is still the engine of Madrid’s midfield. In the 67th minute of the match he took the ball in the middle of the pitch and with a similar export he started the action that ended with the fifth goal in the Liverpool net.
Anfield gave him and Benzema a standing ovation
He was then substituted in the 86th minute of the game along with the other star of the match, 35-year-old Karim Benzema. Both men received a standing ovation from the opposition supporters at Anfield Road for their performance. A lovely gesture.
Luka Modric is maturing like wine. At 37, he’s still playing at the highest level and he’s certainly not slowing down yet. Where is his ceiling?
