Fines are a known and proven thing in the football cabinet and they work in almost every team around the world, even in the lowest competitions. Sometimes the fines are kept between the players and the money collected is then used for a farewell party, other times the fines are used by the coach as a discipline check.

And that is the case with Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa. The former Liverpool player keeps his charges on their toes, because every misdemeanour costs big money.

If a player receives a red card they must take the whole team out to dinner in the next month. The worst player in small games (voted by the winning team) must wear a sign saying “I’m the worst” for the whole of the next week.

If the players break a few rules during the week, it’s going to get pretty expensive. The worst thing to do is to be late on the day of the game for a team meeting or a walk. On the other hand, forgetting birthday cakes is the least serious offense.
