Pau Torres has become one of the key figures of Villarreal in recent years. Now, however, the Spaniard is changing his jersey, having been selected by Unai Emery, who knows him from his time at the Spanish club, to join Aston Villa. The skilful stopper will cost the English club just under 40 million euros.

There was talk of Torres’ arrival almost immediately after Emery took the helm at Aston Villa. The traditional English club has a very good team, but the defence definitely needs to be rejuvenated and improved at the same time.

This is despite the fact that Aston Villa conceded just 46 goals in the last Premier League season, with only the top four – Manchester City (33 goals), Arsenal (43 goals), Manchester United (43 goals) and Newcastle (33 goals) – doing better.

Much worse off was the attack, which would have finished as high as 11th in the English top flight table last season, with Aston Villa claiming 7th place for themselves and sixth-placed Brighton just a point more.

Torres has already played 136 games in La Liga and has also made 23 starts for the Spanish national team. Moreover, as mentioned, Emery knows very well where he is treading, having managed Torres at Villarreal for over two years.

The prized Spanish stopper will not come cheap as Aston Villa will send €32.5 million to Spain for him, plus another €5 million in potential bonuses. If the player passes the medical tests at the English outfit, there will be nothing stopping the transfer.

Thus, the fans at Villa Park can look forward to another great player who also has future prospects. Earlier, the transfer of Youri Tielemans from Leicester was announced, who also headed to Aston Villa for free.

So we can expect big things from Aston Villa again next season, as only two clubs have picked up more points since Emery’s arrival – Arsenal (42 points) and Manchester City (38 points).
