FIFA with Arsene Wenger is about to come up with a revolutionary change in judging offsides. They want to try and modernise the way offside is whistled.
Arsene Wenger, who is FIFA’s director of global development and has previously served as Arsenal manager, wants offsides to be whistled automatically. Technology is now in development that would allow something like this.
The development of this technology is said to be progressing rapidly. Testing of the new system should take place as early as next year. And the new technology should be put to the test right away at the World Cup in Qatar, which will also take place next year.
Wenger had this to say about the new advancement in football: ”There are a lot of possibilities. There will be big changes in the issue of referees. We still have room for improvement. There is a good chance that we will see something new at the 2022 World Cup.”
It is estimated that the technology will be able to detect to an accuracy of a few centimetres whether or not an offside has been committed. The referee at the touchline would then receive a signal on his watch and it would then be up to him whether or not to raise the flag.
In this case, therefore, the referee would not decide the disputed situations, but the new technology would. There should be no human error. Moreover, in this case, there would be no need to wait for the video referee’s instructions.
