A more cautious battle than expected. Porto’s clash with Arsenal in the opening Champions League semi-final offered a goal only in stoppage time. Galeno, who had earlier in the first half hit the crossbar in a double chance and missed from the spot.
The opening of the match was primarily marked by hard tackles, with Mikel Arteta receiving a yellow card in the second minute. The first major chance came in the 23rd minute, but Galeno hit the crossbar only to punishingly miss.
It was only after that that the visitors got their shots. Leandro Trossard was the first to try his luck from distance, but missed substantially. William Saliba was much more dangerous after a corner kick, but his header just missed the left post.
In the 40th minute, Evanilson got a shot away after a team move. But his effort was caught by David Raya in the middle of the box. Kai Havertz had another header on the other end. But unlike the Burnley game, it was not between the three posts.
Galeno finally decided the match at the very end
Both teams went into the booths goalless after a cautious half-time. After the change of sides the game continued at a similar pace until in the 54th minute Martin Odegaard fired from outside the box but only hit the defending player.
In any case, the Gunners took control of the action as the minutes ticked by and didn’t get too far out of the attacking half. But Porto were also angry, and in the 66th minute Evanilson fired in from a volley. However, the Arsenal defence knocked his attempt away for a corner.
In the final passage, it looked as if both teams would take the point. The game was very patchy, Arsenal were the more active side, but AS did not really push forward. Even ten corners were not enough to put the Gunners in any significant danger.
In stoppage time, the visiting Gabriel headed, but uncharacteristically his header missed the target. Just when it seemed to be done, Galeno took the ball from distance and this time he was accurate. Porto take a 1-0 lead into the Emirates Stadium.
