A cautious start to the first Champions League eight-final between Arsenal and Porto was sparked by an unconverted big chance for the home side. Brazilian Galeno refused to send his team into the lead.

It was a cautious start to the game from both sides, with the teams battling it out in midfield. The first real chance came midway through the first 45 minutes. Galeno took a centre from the right and hit the crossbar.

Arsenal survived two missed chances

Considering it was a shot from a small area, it was a goal scoring chance. In any case, the Brazilian speedster had a second chance, but missed the half-covered goal with a penalty. Arsenal survived a double chance.

Porto can still take comfort in keeping the Gunners at bay for now. After 35 minutes, the score is tied and Arsenal haven’t had a single decent chance. You can watch the match live on Nova Sport 4.

It was expected to be a more offensive game

Both teams went into the Champions League eight-final in different mindsets. Porto is not as dominant as last season, only third in the league behind Lisbon’s Sporting and Benfica, and has won only one of their last three games.

Arsenal, on the other hand, have won their first five league games of the calendar year for the first time in club history. At the same time, the previous two away games were won with 11 goals scored – West Ham were hammered (6:0) and Burnley scored five (5:0).

The forces were balanced by both the long-standing home strength and the greater cup experience of recent years. The Gunners still have a young squad, having only played Europa League last season, while Porto regularly reach the LM eighth-finals.

Galeno finally scored the only goal of the game just seconds before the end of the match. And Porto will go into the rematch in London with a promising result.
