The French coach spent 22 years with this team and led them to the greatest successes in the club’s history. Today we can wish him a happy birthday and remember his most famous moments.
Arséne Wenger was born on 22 October in Strasbourg. He was introduced to football by his father, who used to go to Germany with him to watch Mönchengladbach games. As a player, Wenger never made a significant impact, he only started to thrive in coaching.
The beginnings of his coaching career were linked to Nancy and Monaco. Then he had a taste of engagements in Japan. In France, he won the league and the cup with Monaco. In Japan, he won the Cup and the Super Cup.
In 1996, he became manager at the famous Arsenal. Nobody knew him until then, the headlines in the papers were Arséne Who? (Arséne Who?), but he soon showed that he was a very good coach.
He took over Arsenal at a time when the club was not at its most glorious. However, he soon acclimatised to England and celebrated his first league title in the 1997-98 season, as well as winning the FA Cup.
In total, he won three league titles with Arsenal, seven FA Cups and six English Community Shields. The 2003/2004 season was very important for Arsenal, as they managed to dominate the league without a single defeat.
He was the first foreign coach to succeed in the Premier League, he was instrumental in bringing foreigners to the league and overall he was a very important man to have in the islands. As a manager, he led his team to enjoy football above all else, the fans loved it, he gave space to a lot of young players and brought a lot of great talent into world football.
However, his end at Arsenal was not as happy as his whole tenure. In his final years as a coach, he didn’t do well and resigned in 2018. He currently serves as the head of international football development at FIFA.
