Another star on his way out towards the Middle East? Qatari club pursues former Barcelona and Bayern player
Saudi Arabia has taken world football by storm, with clubs there recruiting big stars to their ranks. Will Qatar, which hosted the last World Cup, emulate it? Philippe Coutinho could be one of the first swallows to head in that direction.
Saudi Arabia has taken world football by storm, with clubs there recruiting big stars to their ranks. Will Qatar, which hosted the last World Cup, emulate it? Philippe Coutinho could be one of the first swallows to head in that direction.
Qatar hosted the World Cup, but was subsequently overshadowed by Saudi Arabia, where Cristiano Ronaldo transferred to earlier this year. Several other big stars followed the Portuguese star.
Could it be that Qatar has decided not to be overshadowed by its much bigger neighbour? Apparently, it can’t be counted on, after all, there aren’t many stars in the top league there. Abou Diallo, Sofiano Boufal or Andy Delort are worth mentioning.
Now, however, the arrival of another interesting name is being discussed. The Qatari club Al-Duhail has already agreed terms with the almost 70 times Brazilian international, who has been playing for Aston Villa for the last few seasons.
Philippe Coutinho was once a great talent, he made a great name for himself especially at Liverpool, but after leaving for Barcelona his reputation started to fade. He shone during a loan spell at Bayern Munich, but he never got back to his best.
Not even at Aston Villa, where Coutinho has been since January 2022. First he came on loan, then the Villans bought him for €20 million. However, he never became a cornerstone of the team and even now he does not belong in the starting eleven.
However, Coutinho’s return to form has been complicated by his numerous injuries. Therefore, it is a bit of a surprise that while the player has reached an agreement with the Qatari club, Aston Villa have so far rejected his departure.
The reason is simple. Admittedly, an offer from Qatar could essentially match the amount that Coutinho cost Aston Villa, it’s just that the club is mindful of his experience, while understandably taking into account that they might not be able to find a replacement before the end of the transfer window.
