Another problem for Chelsea! Premier League management takes Abramovich’s directorship away
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has lost his position as a director of his club. The management of the English Premier League has decided to take the position away from him. Officials of the league did so after the English government froze the Russian oligarch’s assets.
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has lost his position as a director of his club. The management of the English Premier League has decided to take the position away from him. Officials of the league did so after the English government froze the Russian oligarch’s assets.
In addition to Roman Abramovich, the British government has frozen the assets of six other Russian oligarchs. The Chelsea owner, however, has the biggest name in England, mainly because of the London outfit he tried to sell just before the asset freeze.
“Following sanctions by the UK government, the Premier League board of directors has expelled Roman Abramovich from his position as a director of Chelsea Football Club,” the Premier League’s official website said.
However, the decision will not affect the running of the club. Or, at least, it should not affect it for the time being. Chelsea players can continue to train and play their matches.
On the other hand, Chelsea cannot buy or sell players. It cannot extend or offer new contracts. Nor can it sell tickets for home games. So the only one who can visit Stamford Bridge is someone who has a season ticket.
Abramovich bought Chelsea in London in 2003. He built it into one of the biggest football clubs in the world. Chelsea have won the Premier League five times, the Champions League twice and the English Cup five times.
Chelsea’s main sponsor has also reacted to the unpleasant situation regarding the Russian oligarch. The mobile operator Three has temporarily abandoned its cooperation with the team. Their logo will disappear from the blue jerseys.
