Liverpool dealt Manchester United a major debacle at the weekend. Harry Maguire was very upset after the game and his comments in an interview with Sky Sports seemed to reflect that. However, his feelings are understood by former England goalkeeper, Paul Robinson.
The ninth round of the Premier League brought the expected duel between Manchester United and Liverpool. However, the duel turned out the way nobody expected – the visitors shot the Red Devils 5: 0!
Understandably, the captain of the home team, Harry Maguire, was very upset after the match. In the post-match interview it was also evident. First of all, he apologised to the fans for their disgraceful performance. He also thanked them for continuing to cheer and sticking with the team.
He further mentioned in the interview that no one else can be blamed for the loss but the Manchester United eleven. “It’s far from good at this club, we’re all very disappointed,” Maguire admitted in an interview with Sky Sports.
“We talked about the game in the dressing room. I’m only here now because I have to be here (for the interview – ed.). The only thing that really needs to be said here is an apology to the fans. We as a club have to improve a lot,” he added.
“I’m not here to analyse the game. Anyway, it was too open from our side, we gave them several chances. To concede so many goals at Old Trafford is not good at all. As a player I look at my performance, as a captain of the team I say we have to come together now,” he concluded.
Leckom felt that Maguire could have seemed resigned in the interview, moreover, he made it quite clear with his words that he was not personally interested in any analysis of the match. Objectively speaking, however, it is not surprising. In short, a five-goal drubbing at home really isn’t right.
After all, it was in this context that Robinson defended the Red Devils captain. ” When you get a beating like that, you don’t want to talk to anyone, let alone the world media,” Robinson explained in an interview with Football Insider.
“You often get questions you don’t want to answer. In all honesty, you don’t even want to talk to your wife or kids at that moment. I understand his attitude. It‘s difficult, but the fans want to hear the players’ comments right after the game,” he adds.
“That’s why players get into trouble. They talk right after the game when they are full of adrenaline. Players then say things they probably shouldn’t say,” he concludes.
Manchester United are currently seventh in the league table with fourteen points after nine games played. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s charges have a tough schedule ahead of them.
30. on October they will visit Tottenham Hotspur in the tenth round of the Premier League, while three days later they will face an unpleasant Champions League match against Atalanta. And on November 6, the Manchester derby is on the agenda.
