An unflattering record! Inter recorded the highest loss in Serie A history last season

Inter Milan and financial difficulties? Nothing new, unfortunately. It’s been talked about for a while, but now the club has released concrete figures that are not very flattering. The Nerazzurri boast the biggest deficit in Serie A history.

In the 2020/21 season, while Inter Milan won the league title after 11 long years, they also achieved one unflattering record.

The Milanese big club released official figures on Thursday, according to which they ended up losing €245.6 million last season. This is the highest deficit in Serie A history.

The coronavirus pandemic is believed to have played a big part in these figures. Thus, Inter have cited a lack of matchday income and a quick end in the European Cups as the main reasons.

It should be mentioned that the club’s revenue amounted to 364.7 million euros.

“The club quickly initiated a rebalancing policy with two primary objectives:: To ensure financial stability and to maintain a competitive team,” the club said in a statement on Thursday.

It is this policy that was likely behind the end of Antonio Conte’s tenure as head coach. He wanted to strengthen his team, only the opposite happened. Inter sold two stars right away, Romelu Lukaku and Achraf Hakimi left.

The Nerazzurri management, however, remains optimistic: “The current season suggests a recovery. Stadiums are opening, we have made money on sales and we have signed new global sponsorship deals which show the growing appeal of our brand. All of this will allow us to significantly reduce our losses.”

Suning, which owns Inter, then continues to look for new investors.

Juventus recorded the highest deficit in Serie A history so far (209.9 million euros).

Inter, in turn, are in the top ten biggest deficits in the competition’s history six times. The 2006/07 season ended with a deficit of 206 million euros, while the 2005/06 season saw a loss of 154.4 million. Other high losses were recorded in the 2008/09 (148.3 million), 2007/08 (148.3 million) and 2014/15 (140.5 million) seasons.
