Chelsea owner Todd Boehly decided to show the world how much money he has in the winter transfer window and broke all records in spending. He spent €330 million during January and Graham Potter was given this loaded squad to work with.

Chelsea spent €330 million in the winter, €611 million for the whole season. It completely shattered the record for transfers in a single season, previously held by Barcelona, who brought in 380 million euros worth of reinforcements in the 2018/19 season.

Chelsea’s squad is now incredibly inflated and coach Potter has at least two, but usually three balanced options at every position.

In goal he picks from the Kepa Arrizabalaga – Edouard Mendy pairing, with the addition of Gabriel Slonina from MLS. At right back, Reece James, one of the Blues’ best players, and captain Cesar Azpilicueta are battling it out.

At right-back, the leader Thiago Silva, $80million signing Wesley Fofana and the youngster Trevor Chalobah are under consideration. At left stopper, Kalidou Koulibaly and winter signing, talented 21-year-old Benoit Badiashile, who has already made two starts at left-back, will battle it out.

Midfield and attack

Ben Chilwell and another expensive summer signing, Marc Cucurella, are available at left-back. There is another big overload in the central positions.

There are 6 players eligible for the starting lineup at the two shield midfielders. The most expensive signing in Premier League history, Enzo Fernandez, Denis Zakaria, Mateo Kovacic, N’golo Kante, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and another winter signing, 18-year-old Brazilian talent Andrey Santos.

Mason Mount, Conor Gallagher or another winter signing, 19-year-old Carney Chukwuemeka, could provide the underclass. In attack, the competition is even more intense.

Raheem Sterling on the right wing, winter signing Noni Madueke, Hakim Ziyech and Omari Hutchinson. On the left wing is $100million signing Mykhaylo Mudryk, João Félix and Christian Pulisic.

Kai Havertz remains the number one striker after all the reinforcements, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Armando Broja and David Fofana backing him up.

Potter thus has a truly luxurious selection, but at the same time a daunting task. After 20 rounds, Chelsea are only in tenth place with 29 points. They are already 10 points behind the Champions League places, 7 points behind fifth-placed Tottenham.
