The title is no longer on the line in La Liga this season, but the fight for the title will be a lot of fun. The bottom of the table is extremely balanced with eight teams in the relegation zone, including big names like Sevilla and Valencia.

There are 8 rounds left to play in the Spanish top flight, and it’s going to be a heated one. This time, however, it’s not the top rungs of the title fight, but the bottom rungs.

Eight teams are in the relegation zone this season. From 12th place on down, it’s a point-by-point pile-up, and every loss can knock you down a few places.

The only almost certain relegation is Elche. Los Franjiverdes have collected just 13 points and are 14 behind the penultimate team in the table. It would take a miracle for Elche to squeeze three teams under them.

After that, it’s even. 19. Almería have 27 points, as do 18th Espanyol and 17th Valencia. Sixteenth Real Valladolid has 28 points, fifteenth Cadiz anyway.

However, neither 14th Getafe with 30 points nor 13th Sevilla with 31 points have won yet. Mallorca with 33 points is a bit better off, although even they are not saved yet, six points is not that big of a margin.

Espanyol are in the worst form of the last five games. They did beat Mallorca at the end of February, but have recorded four defeats in a row since then. They have lost to Valladolid, Real Madrid, Celta Vigo and most recently Girona.

This led to the sacking of coach Diego Martínez, who was replaced by Luis García. There was a change of coach at Real Valladolid as well, as the six-goal loss to Real Madrid was not stopped by coach Pacheta.

The presence of two big names is also quite surprising. Valencia and Sevilla have historically belonged to opposite tiers of the table, with the Andalusian side in particular having regularly qualified for the Champions League in recent years.

For Valencia, the slump has been traceable for quite some time, they were on the relegation rungs for many weeks, until Monday’s draw with Vallecano pulled the Bats up to 17th place.

Espanyol have a very interesting draw. The Catalan team will face Cadiz, Getafe and Sevilla, but in the last two rounds it will face Valencia and Almeria, where it may well be decided.
