Enzo Fernández is undoubtedly a rising star in world football. And London Chelsea are well aware of this, having completed the transfer of this skilful Argentine after a hard effort. However, the transfer sum is indeed huge and will set a new Premier League record!
The 22-year-old Fernández will change his jersey after all before the January transfer window ends.
After a hard effort, London Chelsea have managed to acquire him from Benfica, who will send a truly staggering sum to Lisbon for him. According to Sky Sports, the transfer fee is expected to be €120 million, which will set a new Premier League record.
The most expensive signing in the English top flight was Jack Grealish, who moved from Aston Villa to Manchester City for 117 and a half million euros in 2021. Fernández will thus surpass this amount by two and a half million.
Eight-and-a-half-year contract, the Premier League’s most expensive player
In addition, the respected journalist Fabrizio Romano has come out in the last few dozen minutes with the information that this is supposed to be a long-term contract, but not surprisingly. Enzo has signed with Chelsea for eight and a half years!
The native of San Martín showed his qualities the most at the recent World Cup in Qatar, where he was one of the important links in Argentina’s chase for the title.
However, he only transferred to Benfica a few months ago, on 14 July 2022, for €14 million from River Plate. Needless to say, the current leader of the Portuguese top flight made a huge sum of money from Fernández.
In the Lisbon big club’s jersey, Fernández managed to play 29 games across all competitions, scoring four goals and assisting seven others.
At the World Cup in Qatar, he played seven matches for the Argentine national team, scoring one goal and one assist. However, he shone much more with his play and earned the award for the best young player of the World Cup.
Chelsea negotiated for the signing of the World Cup winner all this month and finally agreed to pay the exit clause. Namely the sum of 120 million euros and £105 million respectively.
Romano, however, made the transfer sum even more precise when he posted Benfica Lisbon’s official message on his Twitter account. And just based on the club’s statement, the amount of this transfer is 121 million euros, plus other costs – 25% of this amount will be received by River Plate.
The 22-year-old midfielder has already undergone a medical in Portugal, and according to Portuguese broadcaster SIC, Fernández will leave for the UK on Wednesday morning, with a private plane due to leave Lisbon airport at 10 hours and 20 minutes.
Update
According to further information published late last night by journalist Romano, the transfer fee will be paid in six instalments. £40 million and €45 and a half million respectively will be paid upfront by Chelsea.
