King has maintained a nice second place in the league with Spartak and will play Champions League qualification. In theory, he could meet Slavia Prague.
“Basically, we achieved what we wanted. We didn’t win the title with Spartak, but we did qualify for the Champions League. We are satisfied and I hope that we will reach the main stage of the Champions League.”
The national midfielder has been linked with a move to West Ham in recent days, who would like him to replace Declan Rice in the long term.
“As we are currently in training camp for the Euros, I want to keep my head completely clear on this one. Basically my agent (Karol Kisel) has all the information if something is planned. I’m just concentrating on the EURO, the season is not over for me yet.”
King played as a stopper in his youth. This is probably the biggest weakness of the Czech team. But he cannot imagine himself there now.
“I don’t feel like a stopper. We have quality stoppers here who have played hard matches, played good matches in the national team against strong opponents. We have the players for that position.”
Despite an excellent season, the hairy midfielder does not have a certain place in the line-up. Vladimír Darida is a constant, Tomas Holeš or Antonín Barák had a great year.
“There has always been competition here, it’s nothing new. The decision is purely up to the coach. I did the maximum in the season, also during the national team reunions that I could attend. If the coach points to me, I’m ready.”
Alex’s midfield colleague Tomas Soucek has been nominated for the Premier League Player of the Season. He was one of the eight best players of the year.
“It’s unreal. I’m very happy for him, he’s a good, humble player. When we are on the pitch together, we understand each other, we know about each other and there is some symbiosis between us. I’m definitely looking forward to the games.”
Despite the many reports of his possible move to the British Isles, King is aware that he still has a valid contract at Spartak.
“My path is a little bit different. Suk gambled on being in the Czech Republic all the time and went straight to the Premier League. I chose to go abroad. But I’m nowhere in the Premier League yet. We talk about it a lot in advance, people are a bit crazy now. You have to be aware of the facts. The fact is that I have three more years on my contract at Spartak, that’s what counts.”
