Ajax and Dortmund have won the previous two Group C matches. Both teams had six points before the third leg and this match was to decide who would take the lead in Group C of the Champions League.
The winning team was the home team Ajax, who gave Borussia Dortmund almost no chance. Huge commitment and relentless attacking was something that the Dortmund players could not cope with. Ajax managed to win 4: 0.
Ajax came out at a high tempo and after ten minutes of play the home fans were already cheering. Dusan Tadic centred into the area where Marco Reus headed the ball into his own net. After an unfortunate own goal, Ajax took the lead.
The second goal came in the 25th minute. Seastien Haller scored for the first time. He crossed the ball to Daley Blind, whose hard shot increased his team’s lead to 2:0.
At the start of the second half, the visitors made their presence felt. Erling Haaland had a great chance but could not find the home goalkeeper. Ajax struck again in the 57th minute. Haller notched his second assist when Antony scored after his pass.
Haller made up for his great performance with a goal. This came in the 72nd minute when Haller pounced on a centre and headed the ball into the Dortmund goal for the fourth time. Haller therefore scored one goal and had two assists in the match.
The home side clearly outplayed Dortmund and are now leading Group C with 9 points. Ajax’s record after three matches is 11:1. Borussia Dortmund are in second place with six points.
Borussia Dortmund will get a chance to make amends for their crushing defeat to Ajax in the next round of the Champions League. Ajax will come to Dortmund, where the two teams will face each other for the second time. The match will take place on 3 November.
