The highlight of the 3rd round of the Premier League was the match between Liverpool and Chelsea. Electrifying atmosphere, fiendish pace of the match, several controversial moments, a controversial sending off. This showpiece had practically everything. The tense duel ended in a 1-1 draw, leaving both teams at the top of the Premier League.

The home side came into the game better. Elliot shot dangerously from distance, narrowly missing Mendy’s goal. Liverpool’s onslaught continued. Alexander-Arnold sent a great pass behind the defence, but Henderson’s follow-up volley was inaccurate. Liverpool’s pressure was increasing, yet the visitors struck first.

From a corner, Havertz hit a precise header to send the Blues into the lead. Chelsea could have extended their lead. In the 35th minute, Lukaku covered the ball excellently, a precise pass found Mount, who had an excellent release but he blew his chance.

In the 41st minute, Liverpool suffered a major setback. Firmino got injured and had to be replaced by Jota.

The end of the first half was very dramatic. During a chaotic situation in Chelsea’s defence, Matip hit the crossbar with his head, the ball deflected to Mané and he only hit James. However, subsequent shots showed that the Blues defender hit the ball with his hand.

After watching the footage, referee Taylor confirmed the handball and awarded Liverpool a penalty kick. The Chelsea defender was also shown a red card. Salah then converted his penalty to equalise at 1-1. Both teams went into the booths tied.

Chelsea were shorthanded, with Liverpool taking over. Van Dijk shot early in the second half, but goalkeeper Mendy made a good save. Fabinho also had a great shot, but Mendy held his team again. Robertson’s long-range shot was also unsuccessful.

Chelsea, who were weakened, had a rare chance. But Lukaku’s shot was blocked. Chelsea’s defence stood up to the final pressure and the game ended in a draw.

It is disappointing for Liverpool that they didn’t make more out of the long power play. On the other hand, a heroic defensive performance brought Chelsea a very valuable point. Both teams extended their league unbeaten run and continue to meet their pre-season expectations.
