Borussia Dortmund have had a successful season. Especially in the Champions League, they did well, reaching the final, where they fell short to Real Madrid. In the Bundesliga, however, the Westphalian side finished fifth. And the Westphalian team had the best atmosphere.

What happened?

According to Sky Sports, the big problem is the relationship between coach Edin Terzic and defender Mats Hummels. The German defender even publicly criticised his coach in an interview before the Champions League final duel. He especially disliked the style of play Borussia presented in the second half of the season.

“I am of the opinion that Borussia Dortmund should not play like that. Against any opponent in the world. I felt insulted on my honor. So submissive and inferior. Two games in Stuttgart and an away game in Leverkusen? That was just defending with eleven men in the box,” Mats Hummels expressed to Germany’s Bild.

What is the solution?

Apparently, the 35-year-old defender will say goodbye to the Borussia fans. He played 508 games for Dortmund, in which he managed to score 38 goals. The Dortmund captain played his last game at BVB on 18 May 2024, when Marco Reus also said goodbye in a 4-0 win.

For a change, Terzic’s contract is valid until the summer of 2025 and the club will not want to sack the coach who got him to the Champions League final. After all, this is only the third time in the club’s history that this has happened.

Dortmund should have already scouted a replacement for the German legend. Borussia are pursuing the arrival of Irish central defender Jake O’Brien, who plays for Lyon. The 23-year-old defender started 32 games last season.

Mats Hummels has offers on the table from overseas in the MLS, but he is not yet tempted. Italian teams like AS Roma, AC Milan and Juventus are monitoring his situation and are about to offer him a contract. There are also sure to be lucrative offers from the Saudi Arabian league.
