He also had the most productive period of his career in the Villains jersey (157 games, 30 goals). After that came successful stints at Manchester United and Inter Milan.

In the 2012/13 season he won the Premier League with the Red Devils, and in the 2020/21 season he won Serie A with Inter.

The player comes to Aston Villa, for free as his contract is coming to an end at the Italian club.
