A mainstay of Bayern Munich and the German national team, or just a “beautiful football influencer”?

The headline, which provoked many reactions and certainly not for the right reasons, did not go down well with the German private TV station RTL. The station’s editor reduced the Bayern Munich and German national team regular to a mere “beautiful football influencer”. What actually happened?

The headline, which provoked many reactions and certainly not for the right reasons, did not go down well with the German private TV station RTL. The station’s editor reduced the Bayern Munich and German national team regular to a mere “beautiful football influencer”. What actually happened?

Bayern Munich and German national team right-back Giulia Gwinn has developed a cruciate ligament injury in her knee (ACL) that will probably keep her out of action for the rest of this season.

This is a big setback for the 23-year-old in her promising football career so far.

The German private TV station RTL decided to report on this event and chose a completely inappropriate headline.

It simply presented the national representative, who just a few months ago ran in the national team’s jersey to the World Cup final in England in front of tens of thousands of fans in the stadium, as a “beautiful football influencer”.

The full headline was: “Horror injury for the beautiful German football influencer.”

The headline of the article caused the authors deserved scorn from the wider football public.

Just like after Graeme Souness’ statement about the “men’s game” in the TV studio, where former England captain Karen Carney sat by his side, a significant part of the football public stood up for the female side of the beautiful game and made it clear that women’s football has its place, even if there is no big championship being played.
