Belgian goalkeeper Arne Espeel died after catching a penalty and subsequently collapsing on the pitch. The young footballer was only 25 years old.
The huge tragedy happened in the Belgian lower league during a Winkel Sport match against Westrizebeke.
The home team was leading 2-1 when shortly after the start of the second half a penalty was awarded to the visiting club. Espeel’s chance to level the match was thwarted. He cheered passionately but collapsed on the pitch shortly afterwards.
Emergency services immediately rushed onto the pitch to save the life of the young goalkeeper, who tragically died shortly after being taken to hospital. The cause of the collapse and subsequent death has not yet been determined.
Moreover, the huge tragedy was watched directly from the bench by Arne’s younger brother.
“Winkel Sport is very saddened by the sudden death of goalkeeper Arne Espeel. We extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. Football is going into seclusion for some time,” read the club’s official statement.
The assistant coach said the ball was still in play after the tackle. The goalkeeper tried to get up as soon as possible after the tackle but collapsed immediately afterwards.
“When we heard about the death, it was an unbelievable blow. I think some players still don’t understand what actually happened,” continued the Belgian club’s assistant coach.
Club members, fans, family and close friends paid tribute to the footballer on Monday in the streets of the town of Saint-Eloois-Winkel.
