Real Madrid have to pay £5 million to Chelsea of London to reach the Champions League final. Paradoxically, this is the fault of Belgian winger Eden Hazard, who retired last October.
Eden Hazard spent the best years of his football career at Chelsea. During his time at Stamford Bridge he was undoubtedly one of the best footballers in the world, his performances helped the Blues to win the league title twice.
However, his dream was to play for Real Madrid, which he eventually did. In the summer of 2019, Los Blancos bought him for the sum of 120 million euros, making him the most expensive signing in the club’s history.
However, this amount was not final, as both clubs also agreed on possible bonuses. One of them, of course, was a bonus for success in the European Cups.
The Belgian winger signed a five-year contract with his new employer. It was supposed to expire at the end of the current season, however, Hazard also ended his active career last October due to health problems.
Despite this, the winner of the current edition of La Liga will have to pay Chelsea a bonus for reaching the Champions League final. According to The Telegraph , it amounts to 5.8 million euros, which is certainly not an insignificant amount. For the London club, on the other hand, it is a nice profit.
In hindsight, it can be said that this transfer has definitely not paid off for Real Madrid. In fact, Hazard has played only 54 games in the top Spanish competition in four seasons, scoring four goals.
His performances in the British Isles are far from being followed up. Although he won the Champions League with his teammates in 2021/22, he only played three games in the world’s most prestigious club competition that season.
