A Danish fairy tale entertains! With just three points, the majority of Europe wishes him to advance

Before the tournament, Denmark was considered one of the dark horses of the European Championship. A strong attack, a superior midfield and a stout defence made the Danes a contender for at least the eighth round of the tournament.

But complications came in the first game against the Finns when Christian Eriksen collapsed during the first half and the shaken Danes did not take even one chance and lost 0:1.

With this defeat, their chances of advancing dropped significantly. The team from the Jutland peninsula missed a penalty, five more shots were saved by Lukáš Hrádecký, while the Finns celebrated from one shot on target. Celebrated is a bit of a strong word, as Joel Pohjanpalo apologised to the fans in Copenhagen instead of celebrating the goal, showing respect to Eriksen.

In the second game against Belgium, the Danes needed to score if possible, at worst to lose by a goal. Given the Russians’ win over the Finns, it was clear that Denmark could go on from second place even if they lost to Belgium by a goal.

Kasper Hjulmand’s men led from the second minute, but Kevin de Bruyne came on after the change of sides and turned the game around with a goal and an assist. Still, the Danish media praised their players, writing articles to the effect that even if they finish in the group, they are heroes not only because of the situation around Eriksen, but also because of their brave performance (they basically outplayed Belgium).

The Danes went into the third game with the situation no longer in their hands. They needed to win and at the same time hoped to lose to the Finns. They met the first condition from the 38th minute, but the Finns held the tie at that point.

Yussuf Poulsen added an insurance goal after the change of sides and the stadium celebrated Romelu Lukaku’s goal moments later. But in the 69th minute, the stadium fell silent. Double shock. A penalty for the Russians and a Belgium goal called back for a millimetre offside. Reduced to 1: 2.

Seconds after the penalty, the crowd roared for a second time. De Bruyne’s goal (or rather Hradecky’s own goal) was already in effect and the Danes were then promoted from second place. They added two more goals, Belgium increased their lead and after the final whistle, seven letters shone on second place in the group. DENMARK.

Advancing from second place with three points is of course very fortunate, but on the other hand the Danes deserved it the most out of the three selections in the group. Most of Europe wished them well, with fans from all corners of Europe congratulating them on social media.

In addition, the Danes have a nice opponent for further promotion, they will face Wales, the second team of Group A, in the eighth round. An unpleasant but playable opponent.
