One of the most sympathetic teams in English football can start looking for a new coach. That’s because Roberto De Zerbi, who took over the club in 2022, will leave Brighton after this season. The Italian has performed superbly in limited conditions.
The Seagulls played attractive attacking football under him, coped with the departures of key players and collected unexpectedly good results. The former coach of Shakhtar Donetsk and Sassuolo has also received praise from Pep Guardiola, who described him as one of the best coaches of our time.
De Zerbi is still only 44 years old. In the last year in particular, he has been talked about in connection with the world’s big clubs. There has been speculation, for example, that he will replace Xavi at Barcelona or Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool.
His situation was also supposed to be monitored by Manchester United, who are making a back door in case they lose patience with Erik ten Hag. However, Juventus are now without a coach and Bayern Munich are also looking for a new manager.
Roberto De Zerbi is leaving Brighton. What’s next?
“Roberto has done excellent service for us for two years. He has taken the club to new heights, not least taking us to Europe for the first time, which will live long in the memory of our fans,” commented club boss Tony Bloom to the club ‘s website on the end of his association.
De Zerbi and Brighton have agreed to mutually end their partnership so that both parties can address their futures as quickly as possible. His contract was valid until 2026.
The Italian will now get to thank the fans in the last home game of the season. “I’m sad to leave, but I’m proud of what we achieved together. Brighton and I will now be able to continue our work in the way that suits everyone best, so that we can implement our ideas and visions,” the coach let slip.
He said he has enjoyed two years of intense work in the Premier League. He now wants to have some time to consider his next steps, however, there are already rumours in Germany that he could replace Thomas Tuchel at Bayern. According to German media reports, he was the second favourite to become head coach after Xabi Alonso, according to sporting director Max Eberl.
