Bayern Munich are in a very uncomfortable situation. After Saturday’s debacle at Leverkusen, they are five points behind the leaders. The situation is not in their hands. Coach Thomas Tuchel is under fire from fans and pundits alike. The club is keeping him in place for now, but there is already speculation in the media about a possible successor.

The Bundesliga has faced criticism in recent years. The reason has been simple. Bayern Munich had won eleven titles in a row. That it has at times been a drama, and that the German competition otherwise plays quite possibly the most attractive football in Europe? All of this was overshadowed by the Bavarians’ dominance.

Not much was expected to be much different this season. Thomas Tuchel may not be performing any miracles after taking the helm, and the game is creaking here and there, but the results are not bad. On another occasion, it would probably be enough for the top spot in the league. Not now.

There’s one team that’s doing even better. Bayer Leverkusen are exceeding all expectations and dominating Germany. It hasn’t lost yet. Moreover, on Saturday they beat Bayern Munich 3-0, which caused a lot of emotions and reactions in Bavaria, just not positive ones.

Experts recall the still misunderstood sacking of Julian Nagelsmann, whom Tuchel replaced. Fans are calling for the dismissal of the former Dortmund, PSG and Chelsea manager. The Bavarian giant may have stood up for its coach after the defeat, but that may mean nothing at all.

The German coach has come under even more pressure than he was already under. It is quite possibly only a matter of time before he stays at the helm for much longer. The German media is already discussing who will replace him. One very unexpected name is being bandied about.

A combination of the unthinkable? Bayern could be taken over by Mourinho

Journalist Christian Falk, who specialises in the sports sector of the German newspaper Bild and in Munich and Bavaria as a whole, has come up with some very surprising information. Namely, José Mourinho is to take up the coaching job at Germany’s most successful club.

“I hear he is already learning German. He has toyed with the idea in the past. If the offer came, he would be ready,” Falk expressed.

This would be a shocking connection. Bayern specialise in offensive and dominant football. It is in its DNA. The only thing the club has in common with the Portuguese strategist is a winning mentality.

But Mourinho is now out of a job. He last managed AS Roma, where he managed to build an interesting team in limited conditions and led the club to success in Europe. It is quite possible that he will not get another offer to coach one of Europe’s big clubs.

If he were to get an offer from Munich, it would be a great chance for him. He could still show that he is not an old hand. He’s not past his prime. And he could break new records and reach new heights.

But the question is how the fans would accept him. They’re very demanding in Munich, both in terms of results and the game he plays. They also look a lot at how whoever represents the club behaves on and off the pitch.
