Italian manager Enzo Maresca is enjoying a promising start at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have won seven of their last ten games in all competitions under him and have scored 27 goals. They currently hold fourth place in the Premier League table, just two points behind leaders Liverpool. Yet Maresca warns against over-expectation about Chelsea’s chances of winning major trophies in his first season.
- Chelsea under Enzo Maresca have won seven of their last ten games in all competitions and scored 27 goals
- Maresca believes his team is not yet ready to compete with clubs like Manchester City or Arsenal, who have had stable management for several years
- Despite the excellent start to the season, Maresca appeals for patience and gradual improvement of the team to be able to fight for big trophies in the future
Chelsea under Maresca’s leadership continue to show good form. On Thursday night, they won 4-2 against Genk. Maresca took advantage of the width of his squad and rotated the entire starting eleven compared to the previous game against Brighton, relieving some players of the physical strain.
The Blues ‘ offense is proving to be a key strength as the team has scored at least four times in three straight games. In a press conference ahead of the upcoming game against Nottingham Forest, Blues coach Maresca spoke candidly about his team’s current form and their long-term ambitions.
Chelsea need to keep improving
Despite the good start , Maresca stresses that Chelsea still needs time to reach the level of teams like Manchester City and Arsenal, who have had stable management for many years.
“I don’t think we can compete with City or Arsenal at the moment,” he said after the Europa League win over Gent. “City have been working with Guardiola for nine years, Arsenal have had Arteta for five years. Stability is key and we are lacking it so far.”
Maresca also called for the need for patience, especially given the fact that Chelsea have spent £1.5bn in recent transfer periods.
Yet the team is still missing key players such as Reece James and Carney Chukwuemeka. “Our targets have to gradually approach the best. We are improving but more time is needed to stabilise,” the Italian added.
