The European Championship is slowly coming to an end. On Sunday evening we will know the winners, but before that we need to play the semi-final matches. One of them will be between Spain and France.

While we would expect both teams to concentrate solely on this match, some players have to deal with football-related problems. One such problem is that of striker Álvaro Morata, who gave a clear statement that surprised Spain fans.

The team captain has announced that he plans to retire from the national team after the tournament. “I’m seriously thinking about quitting. No one respects anyone in our country,” he said in an interview with El Mundo.

“You know the relationship I have with him. I totally agree with his words. It’s unfair how people treat him. After all, he’s our captain!” spain coach Luis de La Fuente responded to Morata’s criticism.

“I don’t read what is written about him anywhere. But when it gets to me that it’s negative things, I automatically disagree with them. Álvaro sets an example on and off the pitch. I will always stand by him,” he added.

The Atlético Madrid striker’s form at the tournament is not ideal, having only scored in the opening game against Croatia. After that, he came up empty four times, but he doesn’t have to be sorry.

Spain won all their matches in the tournament, even if it was only in extra time against Germany. The semi-final against France awaits them today, in which Spain is a slight favourite.
