Two young football prodigies are dragging Spain to the European Championship title. Moreover, the younger of the two, 16-year-old Lamine Yamal, broke more records in the match against Georgia. The Georgians may have lost, but they achieved their dream.
A match that was entertaining and turned out exactly as expected. This was the second semi-final of this year’s European Football Championship. Despite falling behind early after an own goal from Le Normand, the favoured Spaniards equalised by half-time and eventually cruised to a comfortable 4-1 win.
Rodri scored first, Fabian Ruiz added the winning goal and Nico Williams and Dani Olmo completed the scoring. One of the contenders for the overall victory put on another great show. But the excellent Georgians also contributed to the high level of the match.
“We were a bit unlucky in the first half, then the game could have looked a bit different. But we have to admit that the Spaniards were better. We have already fulfilled our dream by qualifying from the group,” the CT Sport website quotes the post-match words of the biggest Georgian star, which is undoubtedly Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
Yamal and Williams set records
Barcelona’s treasure Lamine Yamal managed the whole match in the Spanish jersey. At the age of 16 years and 353 days, he entered the history books as the youngest player ever to appear in a Euro knockout match. He surpassed England’s Bellingham (18 years and 4 days at Euro 2020).
“I am very happy. We won, we advanced and I scored a goal. Most importantly, we showed once again that we are a strong team,” Yamal’s strike partner Nico Williams revealed after the game. At the age of 21 years and 354 days, he became the second youngest Spanish scorer in the knockout stage of the Euros.
Spain are thus trailing the title by two youthful prodigies who are, in sum, less years old than, say, Portuguese megastar Ronaldo. Yamal and Williams also ensured that the favourite outshot Georgia 34 to 4.
The next opponent of Luis de la Fuente’s charges will be the home Germans. In a way, Stuttgart will see a small final. The winner of this encounter could easily win the whole tournament. And Georgia? They have already achieved their dream.
