Europe’s biggest loser! Lukaku has already lost three goals because of the video. He’s playing a really great tournament, says De Bruyne
The video referee’s decision has already cost Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku three goals. The last time was in the match against Romania (2-0), when technology revealed his offside. Still, he’s having a great tournament, teammate Kevin De Bruyne thinks.
The video referee’s decision has already cost Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku three goals. The last time was in the match against Romania (2: 0), when technology revealed his offside position. Still, he is having a great tournament, his teammate Kevin De Bruyne thinks.
It was the biggest surprise of the first round of the preliminary groups. Slovakia beat Belgium 1: 0 thanks to a goal by Ivan Schranz. The favourite had to make a comeback against the Romanians, and it worked. Goals by Youri Tielmans and Kevin De Bruyne made it 2-0.
With our eastern neighbours losing to Ukraine in their second game, all teams in Group E now have three points each. And this is a situation that has never happened before in the history of the championship, according to the statistics on the uefa.com website.
“The early goal was obviously encouraging and gave us confidence. We’re happy we did it, but we made it unnecessarily difficult for ourselves with missed chances. We could have decided earlier, we are still struggling in the end. We need to work on that,” said Tielemans, the scorer of the winning goal.
Underdog captain Lukaku praises
The underdog of the match, and indeed of the whole championship, is Romelu Lukaku. The AS Roma canon has scored three goals, but not one was conceded by the video referee. Against Romania it was because of an offside. At least he got an assist on Tielemans’ goal.
“Romelu played a great game today. He is very unselfish, as you saw yourself when he set up the goal for Youri (Tielemans). Theway I see it, he’s playing a really great tournament,” team captain Kevin de Bruyne praised his teammate.
“We have passion, we have energy. We need to keep the ball on the hoof for more of the game and finish a lot more often. But the important thing is that we are creating chances,” the Manchester City midfielder added more about the match.
The tangled Group E will only be resolved by the last duels. The Belgians will finish the regular season on Wednesday with a match against Ukraine, while Romania will play Slovakia.
