Two Barcelona stars are likely to miss the Euros due to injury! Who else will be missing in Germany?
The European Championships are approaching and with them, unfortunately, come injuries. The biggest loss may be Poland, whose star striker and captain Robert Lewandowski has been injured. But the Dutch are not much better off, as they will miss Frenkie de Jong.
The European Championships are approaching and with them, unfortunately, come injuries. The biggest loss may be Poland, whose star striker and captain Robert Lewandowski has been injured. But the Dutch are not much better off, as they will miss Frenkie de Jong.
Poland without strikers?
On Monday, Poland and Turkey played each other in the last preparatory match. The previously injured Polish striker Arkadiusz Milik was clear that he would not take part in the Euros, as he injured his knee during the match against Ukraine and had to undergo surgery. However, he was joined by two other players during the match against Turkey.
The first was forward Karol Swiderski, playing for Italian side Verona. He sent the Poles into the lead in the 12th minute, but had to make a substitution immediately afterwards. After half an hour of play, he was joined by Poland’s biggest star, Robert Lewandowski. His fate is not yet clear, but his participation in EURO 2024 is in jeopardy.
The Netherlands are without a backup for a change
The Netherlands are another team riddled with injuries. Here, one of the key midfielders, Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong, has not recovered. He last started on 21 April against Real Madrid, where he played 46 minutes and injured his ankle. He hasn’t made a start since then and until Monday there was a question mark over his start.
“He always felt pain in training. We concluded that he would not be fit enough for the next three weeks,’‘ Oranjes coach Ronald Koeman said. The Barcelona star is to be replaced by Ian Maatsen, a Borussia Dortmund player. However, that replacement has yet to be cleared by UEFA.
However, a question mark has emerged over another Dutch midfielder, Teun Koopmeiners. He won the Europa League with Atalanta but may not play in the Euros. He was injured in the warm-up for the preliminary match against Iceland and according to the coach, only Tuesday’s tests will show what it looks like.
Ironically, the two weakened national teams, Poland and the Netherlands, will play each other in the first round at the Euro. We can look forward to this duel on Sunday at 3 pm.
Apart from the aforementioned players, Michal Sadilek will be missing at the Euro, as he was injured after a fall on his tricycle. The Slovak national team is unclear about the starts of Peter Pekarik and Denis Vavra. Belgium is waiting for more detailed results on defender Thomas Meunier, who injured his thigh muscle.
