Will Pep Guardiola stay at Manchester City? This is the question that is currently being addressed not only by fans of the famous English club, but also by the vast majority of the world’s media. In any case, the chairman of the organization Khaldoon Al-Mubarak spoke about the current situation.
In the summer of 2016, Manchester City coach Manuel Pellegrini quit the bench and Pep Guardiola came in his place. The latter had successful stints at Barcelona and Bayern Munich and fans believed he would become an icon.
Today, it has been almost eight years since Guardiola has been at the club and it can definitely be said that he has lived up to expectations. He may even have surpassed them, as he has collected trophies like a treadmill during his tenure.
He has won the Premier League title six times, the FA Cup twice, the League Cup four times, the Community Shield on two occasions, the Champions League once, the European Super Cup and the Club World Cup.
But those halcyon days may well be over in a relatively short space of time. The Spanish strategist has a contract at the English big club until the end of June 2025. But as far as its extension is concerned, Guardiola is closer to leaving rather than staying in Manchester.
Guardiola himself recently admitted that. “The reality is that I am closer to leaving than staying. We spoke with the club, my emotions want me not to leave. I will stay next season and we will talk again during the season. But eight or nine years? We’ll see…” said Guardiola at a press conference after the last game of this Premier League season.
Will Guardiola stay in Manchester?
So what will be Guardiola’s future is still a question. Neither the club’s chairman Khaldoon Al-Mubarak, who will be in talks with the current Citizens’ manager about the future, has revealed any further information.
“We have had this conversation many times. Pep has always been fully committed to this club, fully committed to every contract he has signed with us. We will make the decision about his future together. I have no doubt that we will find – as always – the right solution that will suit him and us,” said Al-Mubarak, quoted by the Mirror.
The Manchester City chairman further noted that he could not put into words what Guardiola has given and brought to the organisation. According to Al-Mubarak, he has changed the whole of English football. However, there is one thing that he says all coaches want to avoid.
“One of the things you always want to avoid is complacency. You never want to be complacent. You want to keep yourself hungry. We want to go for the treble again next season. And win the Premier League five times in a row? No doubt we want that. Everyone at the club will tell you that – the management, the coaches, the players,” he said.
