Canada as the most attractive team of the whole World Championship? Wrong! The stands are absolutely dead, fans complain
Hockey championship in Prague is close to record attendance. The games are entertaining, the atmosphere in the stands is excellent for most of the games. However, anyone who expects Canada’s games to be the most entertaining is mistaken. The local fans are not very interested in the World Cup and it is simply evident in the arena.

The best place to host the World Cup of Hockey? Czech Republic. No one doubts it, as the record attendance in the arenas confirms. The peak of the hockey year simply attracts domestic audiences, and the same is true in neighbouring countries.
At this year’s World Championship we will unusually find all of our neighbours and the organisers have gone against the grain by bringing Slovakia and Poland to Ostrava, so more local fans can come.
However, the Austrians and Germans are also becoming more and more interested in hockey, with more active groups coming with a drum. And even if it’s not the best hockey on the ice, the atmosphere is simply captivating.
Austria’s example in particular is a beautiful one, because after losing to Denmark, the underrated team almost scored a point against Switzerland, then made up for a five-goal loss to Canada and fell in overtime, and then beat Finland on Thursday.
But there are also games that don’t drag too much and don’t entertain the fans. And it may seem like a paradox, but they are often the games of Canada, which has several NHL stars on its team.
The game against Norway didn’t impress the crowd in Prague’s O2 arena and the atmosphere was like freezing. It was not a bad atmosphere, since the Canadian audience is not interested in the World Championship and the Norwegians are quite far away.
So it looked more like a friendly match, which was noticed by many fans. But the group stage is gradually coming to an end and it is clear that the knockout stages will not offer any more boring matches.
